Collagen Guns: Principle and Results — A Non-Invasive Firming and Lifting Option

A collagen gun is a non-invasive aesthetic device that delivers heat into the dermis via high-frequency radio waves, stimulating collagen production to achieve firming, lifting and softening of fine lines. Designs include handheld and portable units; common brands include BTL Exilis 360 and others, and they may be used on areas that age easily, such as the face and neck.

Principle

Through high-frequency radio waves or monopolar radiofrequency energy, heat is delivered into the dermis and held at about 39–42°C for at least 4 minutes, promoting fibroblast proliferation and the generation of new collagen, improving elasticity, tightening contours and softening fine lines. It also supports vascular circulation and skin metabolism. Most collagen guns come with different tips, so energy output range and depth can be adjusted according to facial contour and skin thickness.

Main effects

  • Firming facial contour: improves laxity of the apple cheeks and chin line
  • Softening wrinkles and fine lines: nasolabial folds, crow’s feet, forehead lines, neck lines
  • Improving enlarged pores: collagen production helps pores appear finer
  • Enhancing skin elasticity
  • Reducing dark circles: stimulates periocular blood circulation
  • Body lifting and tightening

Side effects and who is unsuitable

  • Side effects are mild: brief redness, a burning sensation and slight swelling, settling in a few hours to a few days
  • Acne patients: radiofrequency heat may worsen acne; it is advisable to wait until the condition is stable
  • Those with implanted metal devices: such as pacemakers or artificial joints; a doctor’s agreement should be obtained first

Treatment frequency and aftercare

  • A complete course is usually 5–10 sessions, once every 2 weeks
  • Results typically begin to appear about 2–4 weeks after completion, and may last 3–6 months
  • Most people can wear make-up and go to work as usual the same day
  • After treatment, avoid prolonged sun exposure and vigorous exercise; avoid stimulating skincare for 3–5 days
